Scholarship

I am currently researching alternative assessment practices and teacher reactions to those practices. I am also working on projects about Appalachian women's literature and LGBTQ+ writing spaces.

Teaching

I teach first- and second-year composition and creative writing courses at Western Carolina University. I believe creating space for people to explore themselves and the world around them through writing is a deeply important, life-affirming act of community, both within classrooms and beyond.

Service

I have served on the steering committee for the Appalachian Studies Association, the advisory board for the Appalachian Futures series at the University Press of Kentucky, as a Faculty Fellow in Inclusive Pedagogy for the Coulter Faculty Commons, and on various committees and service groups within the English Studies department and Western Carolina University. I led a research team which advocated for hiring mental health professionals at Mitchell Community College, where I was teaching at the time, and co-created and co-led the college's first in-house Safe Zone training in 2018.

Speaking Engagements

I have acted as a keynote speaker, guest lecturer, invited speaker, training coordinator, faculty fellow, and community writing facilitator. I have also taken part in academic conference panels and workshops on pedagogy, Appalachian, queer, and women's literature, first-generation college students' experiences, and more.

I'm always interested in collaborating and visiting with faculty and students at colleges and universities around the country. Please don't hesitate to reach out via email at ebrier [at] wcu [dot] edu with speaking and networking opportunities.
